According to reports, TikTok’s engineering team ran an experiment where they disabled safeguards designed to prevent users from being overwhelmed by harmful content. The logic? Fewer guardrails might make the app more engaging. Spoiler alert: it did. Users spent more time scrolling. Shocking.
But here’s the kicker—TikTok didn’t exactly broadcast this little ethical hiccup to the public. It wasn’t until senators caught wind and started demanding answers that the company fessed up. Now, lawmakers are rightly asking whether this experiment violated user trust, privacy laws, or—you know—basic human decency.
This isn’t just a TikTok problem. It’s a symptom of a much larger issue in the AI ecosystem: when engagement metrics trump ethics, we all lose. Platforms are increasingly using AI to tweak algorithms in ways that prioritize time spent over well-being. And when those tweaks involve disabling safety features?
