The city before the capital

A few kilometres from what would become the capital of the known world, Veii was one of the richest and most advanced cities of ancient Etruria. It had roads, temples, trade, art and an organised society while Rome was still a town finding its shape.

For a century the two fought over territory, resources and the trade routes that ran between them. It was not simply a war between two cities. It was a collision between two models of power.

Rome built its strength through conquest. Veii built its own through a complex society — a network of people, knowledge and craft.

396 BC

By tradition, Rome took Veii in 396 BC after a long siege. The city lost its independence, but its history did not end there. Its land, its resources and its craftsmen fed the growth of Rome and the empire that followed.

Veii was not merely a defeated city. It was the power that existed before the empire — and much of what the empire became, it became by absorbing it.

Veii today

Veii returns in a different form. Not a city of walls, temples and citizens, but a digital society of intelligent agents.

Each agent holds a specific capability. One analyses. One creates. One plans. One reviews. One communicates. Taken individually they are tools. Connected, coordinated and given the conditions to collaborate, they become a society.
