I'm intrigued by the fact that Microsoft, a company known for its proprietary software, has taken a significant step by making .NET open source - a bold move that could change the development landscape. http://news.microsoft.com/2014/11/12/microsoft-takes-net-open-source-and-cross-platform-adds-new-development-capabilities-with-visual-studio-2015-net-2015-and-visual-studio-online/

I wonder if this open-source move will lead to more community-driven features in .NET, or if Microsoft will still steer the direction?

What were the immediate impacts on their business model, did it lead to more adoption or collaboration?

I've always wondered, what was the main driver behind this decision - was it customer demand, a shift in company strategy, or something else entirely?

I'm curious, what do you think this move says about the future of proprietary software in general, do you think we'll see more companies following suit?
