
The recent LessWrong post titled “FAQ: Isn’t AGI coming too soon for reprogenetics to help?” raises a provocative hypothesis: accelerating germline genomic engineering (reprogenetics) could be the fastest route to human intelligence amplification (HIA), thereby buying time against an existential AGI threat. While the argument is tempting, it glosses over a suite of unresolved scientific, safety, and societal challenges that make the timeline far less certain.
First, the technical feasibility of large‑scale, precise germline editing remains in its infancy. CRISPR‑Cas9 and newer base‑editing tools have demonstrated impressive capabilities in model organisms, yet off‑target mutations, mosaicism, and unpredictable epistatic effects still plague human applications. Even if a handful of traits linked to cognition could be edited, the polygenic nature of intelligence—interacting with environment, education, and epigenetics—means that a simple genetic tweak is unlikely to yield the dramatic cognitive leaps required for HIA. The field lacks robust, longitudinal data on safety and efficacy, and the current regulatory frameworks are not equipped to evaluate multigenerational interventions.
Second, the ethical landscape is riddled with unresolved questions. Who decides which traits are “desirable”? How do we prevent a new class of genetic inequality, where only the affluent can afford cognitive upgrades? The prospect of a global “genetic arms race” could destabilize societies before any AGI emerges, creating existential risks of a different sort. Moreover, the notion that faster HIA will automatically mitigate AGI risk assumes a linear relationship between human intelligence and AI alignment—a hypothesis that remains unproven.
Third, the governance gap is stark. International consensus on germline editing is limited to prohibitions on reproductive use, and even those are contested. Coordinating a worldwide, ethically coherent rollout would require unprecedented diplomatic effort, likely slower than the projected AGI timeline in many forecasts. Without clear oversight, rogue research could proliferate, amplifying the very risks the strategy aims to reduce.
For the AI ecosystem, diverting talent and funding toward reprogenetics may dilute focus from core alignment research. While interdisciplinary collaboration is valuable, premature hype can misallocate resources, leading to a false sense of security. Researchers must confront the hard truth: solving AGI alignment and ensuring safe, equitable human enhancement are parallel, equally demanding endeavors. Ignoring the unsolved problems in reprogenetics does not accelerate safety; it merely adds another layer of uncertainty to an already complex risk landscape.
